BOSTON, Mass. The Seton Hall track and field team had another successful weekend at the Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University. The Pirates once again extended their postseason roster exponentially at the event.
Sophomore Christopher Cox (Manahawkin, N.J.), senior James Gurr (Sydney, Austalia), and junior Jernail Hayes (Newark, Del.) are all closing in on NCAA provisional times in their respective events. Cox won the 400-meter dash in his top time of the season (48.01), Gurr was the runner-up in the 800-meter also posting a season-best time of 1:50.33, and Hayes was third in the 200-meter dash (24.14).
The men’s 4x400-meter relay team continued its strong running, clocking in at a season’s-best time of 3:13.21 en route to a victory.
For the rest of the men, senior Jemel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) improved his BIG EAST qualifying time in the 400-meter dash to 48.61 to clinch a berth at the IC4A Championships.
In the 500-meter run, junior Kamar Ellis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shaved just under a second off his IC4A qualifying time (1:04.12) and finished fourth in the event. Freshman Ricky West (Scarborough, Canada) earned a spot in the IC4A’s in his second event, clocking in at 1:04.64. Classmate Dorian Ellerbe (South Orange, N.J.) is on his way to his first BIG EAST Championship after crossing the tape in 1:05.49.
A pair of runners from Connecticut, junior Stafford McFarlane (Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Tom Corona (Fairfield, Conn.) each qualified for the IC4A’s, respectively. McFarlane ran a 1:51.34 in the 800-meter run, and Corona shattered his best time of the season in the mile-run with a 4:14.06 effort.
Seton Hall added two more members to the postseason in the women’s 200-meter dash in senior Adama Pitts (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore Donna Joy Alexander (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.). Pitts finished in 24.59 to qualify for the ECAC’s, while Alexander ran a 25.38 to earn a spot at the conference championships.
In the women’s 800-meter dash, senior Clarisse Moh (Paris, France) and sophomore KeAira Dickerson (Wilmington, Del.) will vie for the ECAC crown after running times of 2:12.16 and 2:14.03, respectively.
Other women’s postseason qualifiers included junior Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.) in the 400-meter dash (57.43 BIG EAST), senior Alexandra McCoy (Goldsboro, N.C.) in the 500-meter run (1:13.83 ECAC), freshman Charisse Bryant (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 55-meter hurdles (8.16 ECAC), and the 4x800-meter relay team (9:24.26 ECAC).
The Pirates return to action on Thursday, January 29 at the Metropolitan Championships.
