Baseball Pitching Falters Against Wagner, 15-4

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.   Senior Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with a run scored and sophomore Ed Brown (Edison, N.J.) had two doubles, however the trio of freshman pitching were unable to hold Wagner as the Pirates fell, 15-4, Wednesday afternoon at Richmond County Ballpark.

After the Pirates (15-16) took the lead with an RBI fielder’s choice groundout by junior Chris Spagnuolo (Tabernacle, N.J.) scoring sophomore Frank Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the top of the first, the Seahawks (14-13) came back with three runs in the bottom half.

With two-outs Vin Avella belted his team-leading ninth home run of the season to center field to tie the game, and four batters later Brian Martutartus gave Wagner a, 3-1, lead with a two-run single through the right side of the infield.

Trailing, 4-1, entering the visiting half of the fourth, the Pirates cut their deficit to, 4-3.  Freshman Charlie Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) started the inning with a double down the left field line and Spagnuolo drew a walk.  Both advanced on a successful sacrifice bunt by sophomore A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) and come around to score on a RBI groundout by freshman Michael Betz (Mine-Hill, N.J.) and a passed ball.

Wagner, however, would open the game up in the bottom of the fourth, batting around and scoring five runs with RBI singles by Jared Gruccio and Chris Drechsel along with an two-run single by Matt Logan and an RBI double by Martutartus.

Freshman Benedy Mejia (Paterson, N.J.) (0-2) took the loss surrendering nine runs, eight earned, in 3.2 innings striking out two.  A.J. Pirozzi 91-2) picked up the win after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits in five innings.

The Pirates will take to the road for a three-game BIG EAST Conference series against Pittsburgh beginning Friday afternoon.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
