DADE CITY, FL. The Seton Hall men’s golf team shot an impressive 1-under par, 287, in the third and final round of the 2009 BIG EAST Championship to claim third place among the 12 conference teams for a second consecutive year. 

The 287 gave the Pirates a three-round score of 6-over-par, 285-298-287-870, at the par-72 Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.  Seton Hall finished behind the same two teams as they did last season, only the order was reversed.  As opposed to last year, Louisville claimed the team title with an astounding 17-under-par, 847, while Marquette took second with a 12-under-par, 852.

Notre Dame placed fourth for a second straight year with a 9-over-par, 873, and USF rounded out the top five with an 11-over-par, 875.

Rising to the occasion, the Pirates saved two of their three best single-round team scores for the BIG EAST Championship.  Only their 282 in the second round of the Towson Invitational earlier this year was better than rounds one and three at the BIG EAST Championship over the extended weekend.

Had Seton Hall shot an 870 last year in the BIG EAST Championship at the par-72, Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Ky., the Pirates would have taken home the title.  Marquette fired an 874 to win the event.

Seton Hall’s lone senior, John Zur (Glenview, Ill.), saved the best three-round performance of his career for his final appearance at the BIG EAST Championship.  Zur shot a 2-under-par, 70, in the final round to complete a dazzling tournament at 5-under-par, 69-72-70-211.  His performance earned him a tie for fifth place among 60 individual golfers.  Zur’s 211 is the lowest score for a three-round event in his career.  The 2009 BIG EAST Championship also marked the first time he has finished a three-round tournament under par and had each individual round in a single-tournament par or under.

Junior David Sampson (Warren, R.I.) and freshman Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.) both shot par in the final round to finish 3-over-par and tie for 12^th place among all individual golfers.  Sampson’s 72 on Tuesday book-ended a tournament of two strong rounds around a forgettable round number two.  After sharing the tournament lead with a 69 in round one, he shot a 6-over-par, 78, on Monday.  Sampson finished the tournament with an impressive 69-78-72-219.  Spencer was more consistent and steadily improved by a single stroke as the tournament progressed.  He finished with a 74-73-72-219.

Junior Ryan Castanet (McDonald, Pa.) and sophomore Colin Van Es (Granger, Ind.) rounded out the scoring for Seton Hall with a 12-over-par, 228, each and tied for 39^th place among individual golfers.  Castanet had a difficult start to his tournament with a 78 and 77 in rounds one and two respectively, but bounced back to contribute mightily in round three with a 1-over-par, 73.  Van Es was just the opposite.  The Granger, Ind. native helped get the Pirates off to a quick start with a 1-over-par, 73, in round one, but faded as the tournament wore on with a 76 in round two and 79 in round three.

Seton Hall’s third place finish this season appears even more impressive considering their loss of Kyle Morris to graduation.  Morris tied for fourth in last year’s BIG EAST Championship and is widely considered one of the top golfers in Seton Hall history.

The Pirates will complete the 2008-09 golf year with the Cavalier Classic, April 25-26.  Hosted by the University of Virginia, this is a 36-hole tournament held on the par-72, 6,875-yard Birdwood Golf Course.  Among the 18-team field are two other BIG EAST opponents, Rutgers and Villanova.  Last year, Seton Hall placed 16^th as a team.  Van Es was the top Seton Hall finisher and tied for 12^th place individually.
