SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University Athletic teams raised a combined $700 from “Penny Wars.” The proceeds were donated to Strengthen Our Sisters, a grass-roots, not-for-profit women’s shelter located in Passaic County. From April 21-24, 2009 the teams competed against one another where one penny was worth one positive point and all silver coins and dollars were negative points according to their face value in pennies. The Softball team was awarded the winner of the competition, as they raised over $150.
Strengthen Our Sisters was founded in December of 1990 by Sandra Ramos, who also founded Shelter Our Sisters in 1970, the first shelter for battered women and children in North America. The 177-bed shelter, which aims to restore balance and empower women and children, provides crisis intervention and counseling, support groups, self-help workshops, legal services, and emergency medical and financial aid in addition to shelter, food, clothing, and educational development needs. Ramos, who serves as the Executive Director of the domestic violence shelter, is also a professor at Ramapo College and William Patterson University where she teaches courses such as the Dynamics of Domestic Violence, Social Issues, and Women’s Changing Roles. Passionate about the plight of battered women and the fate of children of violent marriages, Ramos has committed her life to helping women and children break free of the cycle of domestic violence as an advocate in the public and private sectors.
The money raised by the Seton Hall Athletes will contribute to building their OMNI Day School, a licensed preschool and day care center for infants to children 11 years-old. More information about Strengthen Our Sisters, how you can help, and their upcoming events can be found on their website at www.sosdv.org. All donations are tax deductible and are graciously accepted in order to continue their mission of breaking the cycle of domestic violence, poverty, and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment.
