
Volleyball Drops Opener to Fordham, 3-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped its season opener to Fordham, 3-0 (25-14, 13-25, 23-25), to begin the University at Buffalo Tournament on Friday. The Pirates will continue play at the tournament on Saturday, August 29 against Boston College at 10:30 a.m. before playing Buffalo at 7:00 p.m.
Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) led all players with 13 digs on the day. Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) led the offense with six kills. The Rams (1-0) boasted a .319 attack percentage, and were led by Kailee May who had 14 kills at a .423 clip.
After a back-and-forth start in set one, the Rams went on an 8-1 spurt to hold a 12-6 lead and forced SHU to call a timeout. Fordham pushed the margin to 20-10 and took the opening frame, by a 25-14 score.
Seton Hall fell behind by 8-2 early in the second set and the Rams never looked back once again, taking the game, 25-13.
The teams went toe-to-toe in the third set with neither team leading by more than three points. With the score knotted at 23-23, a consecutive kills by Christine Griffiths gave Fordham the final two points of the match and preserved the win.
