BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team picked up its first win of the season after sweeping Buffalo, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) to wrap up the University at Buffalo Tournament. Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Matusiak and junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) posted nine kills apiece to pace the Pirates (1-2). Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) registered 24 digs.
After a back-and-forth start to the match, Seton Hall used a 6-1 run in the middle of the first set to break away to hold an 18-13 edge and never let Buffalo (2-1) come any closer than four points to win the frame.
The Bulls scored four straight to begin set two, and led by as many as five points with the score 9-4. The Pirates slowly chipped away at their deficit and tied the game at 14-14 after a Matters ace. With the score still tied, 16-16, sophomore Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) recorded a kill to give SHU its first lead of the set.
Buffalo came back to take the lead, 20-19, but it was a brief advantage as the Pirates ripped off six straight points to take the 2-0 edge in the match.
In the third set, the Hall went on a 7-1 tear to hold a 12-6 cushion and never trailed in the game to complete the sweep.
The win was just the second road victory in SHU's last 13 matches away from South Orange, dating back to 2007.
The Pirates are back in action on Friday, September 4 against Lamar at the University of Albany Classic.
