PRINCETON, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18), to Princeton on Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Pirates to 2-6 on the year.
Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) had a match-high 24 digs and is now just 16 shy of breaking the Seton Hall career record. Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) was the team's top offensive player with 16 kills and had an attack percentage of .419.
Seton Hall held a 15-13 lead in the opening set, but could not hold on as the Tigers ripped off a 12-2 tear to run away with the frame, 25-17.
Set two was a tight contest that saw the score evened 13 times. With the score, 15-15, senior Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas) and freshman Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) teamed up for a block to give the Pirates the lead. An ace by Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) gave SHU a two-point cushion on the ensuing serve, and the Pirates were able to pull away to a 25-21 set victory.
The Hall came out of the gate strong in the third, taking a 5-1 lead, but Princeton answered with a 9-1 run to take control of the set and regain the match lead.
There was no doubt in the fourth set, as the Tigers led by as many as 11 points and cruised to a 25-18 win to finish off Seton Hall.
The Pirates return to action on Friday, September 11, against Sacred Heart at 2:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill Classic, hosted by Fordham.
