SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team was swept by Yale, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-13) to wrap up the SHU Invitational. Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) and sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) represented the Pirates (6-9) on the All-Tournament Team.
DeVries had seven kills to go with three blocks for the match. Matters posted 22 digs, and is now tied with Rice's Tracey Lee for the nation's longest double-figure dig streak at 52.
The Bulldogs (7-1) took control right from the get-go in the first set, taking a 12-7 lead after a service ace. Tournament MVP, Cat Dailey, extended the advantage to 19-12 with a kill and Yale never looked back, taking the set, 25-16.
Sophomore Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) put the Hall ahead, 4-2, early in the second, but the lead did not last for long. The Bulldogs answered with five straight, and pushed the lead to 12-6, and SHU could not bridge the gap, falling behind 2-0 in the contest.
Another kill by Thornquist tied the third set up, 7-7, but Yale went on another run of 6-1 to pull away and finish the sweep.
The Pirates will travel to the University of Delaware on Wednesday, September 23, in their final tune-up before BIG EAST play. Match-time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
