PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A valiant effort by the No. 7 Seton Hall Pirates came up just short in the BIG EAST Championship against No. 2 Louisville, as the Cardinals took a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21) win.
The Pirates (13-18) were led by senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.), who ended her career with an outstanding 19-kill, 19-dig performance. Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) racked up 17 kills, including the 1,000th of her career.
Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had 14 digs, while sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) totaled 42 assists and 12 digs. Lola Arslanbekova paced the Cardinals (19-7) with 25 kills.
After dropping the opening set, the Pirates regrouped in set two. Trailing 13-12, the Hall scored on back-to-back blocks, and two more Louisville errors made it 16-13. Matusiak later came up with a kill, and an error by Arslanbekova made it a 20-16 game. The Cardinals could get no closer than two the remainder of the way, and an attack error by Taylor Braunies ended the set at 25-22 in favor of the Pirates.
Two kills by Matusiak were part of a 4-1 spurt that gave the Hall a 16-15 edge in set three, but Louisville bounced back with the next four points to go back in front. The Pirates got back to within one twice, including at 24-23, but Anastasia Artemeva came up with the winning kill to give the Cardinals a 2-1 win.
Louisville raced out to a 17-9 lead in the fourth before a furious Seton Hall rally. Led by Osmun, the Pirates scrapped back to within 23-21, but Arslanbekova proved too much in the end, closing the match with the final two kills.
Seton Hall hit .169 for the match, while Louisville finished at a .223 clip. The Cardinals held a 13-12 edge in blocks and 79-62 advantage in digs.
