BERKELEY, Calif. - The #10 California Golden Bears pulled off a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-16) win over the Seton Hall volleyball team on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic. The Pirates (3-6) are back in action tonight against UC Davis at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) led the Hall with eight kills. Sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) had team-highs with 17 assists and five digs.
Tarah Murrey led the Golden Bears (6-0) with 16 kills, while Adrienne Gehan had 10.
The Pirates kept set one close early on, tying the match at four on a kill from Matusiak. Cal quickly seized control after that, as Gehan keyed a 13-1 spurt that made it 17-5. The Hall cut it to 10 later in the set after three straight kills from Matusiak, but it would not be enough as the Golden Bears took a 25-14 win.
Trailing 14-6 in set two, the Pirates put together their best rally of the day. A pair of kills by Matusiak and one from junior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) were part of an 8-1 run that saw the Hall get to within 15-14. Cal took a timeout and responded with eight straight points on its way to a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three was again tight early on, but an 8-1 run midway through put California in command as it closed out the win.
