BERKELEY, Calif. - UC Davis fought off the Seton Hall volleyball team for a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) win in the final game of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic, hosted by California. Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Pirates (3-7).
Matusiak had 10 kills and eight digs for the match, with sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also reaching 10 kills. Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had a team-high 11 digs, while sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) recorded 34 assists.
The Aggies (5-3) got out to a 5-1 lead in set one before the Hall picked up four straight, starting with a kill by sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.), to even the score. With a 9-8 lead, UC Davis began to pull away, taking a 16-11 edge on an ace from Kaitlyn Plum. An ace from Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) later made it a three-point game, but the Pirates could get no closer as set one went to the Aggies.
A kill from Katie Denny made it 8-3 in favor of UC Davis in set two, as it started quickly once again. After trailing by as many as six, Seton Hall gradually chipped away, cutting the deficit to 22-20 after a point from Hugeback. It was not enough, however, as the Aggies regrouped and took the set after a kill from Devon Damelio.
Playing from behind again in set three, the Pirates made it an 8-6 game after an attack by Matusiak. UC Davis would finish strong from that point, pushing out to a 20-13 lead after a kill by Melanie Adams. The Aggies wrapped up the victory on Allison Whitson's game-high 12th kill.
The Pirates are back in action on Tuesday night at Hofstra, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
