HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team fell to Hofstra, 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 16-25, 25-21), on Tuesday night. The Pirates fall to 3-8 on the year.
Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the way with 17 kills and a .297 attack percentage. Junior Meghan Bonk (Hockessin, Del.) provided a lift off the bench with a career-best 14 kills on a .357 clip.
The Hall got off to a sluggish start in the first set, falling behind 11-4 in the early stages. Trailing 19-11, the Pirates finally got into a rhythm offensively and began to rally. Three straight aces by Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) put SHU on top, 23-22, but a kill and a block gave the lead back to the Pride. Sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) answered with a score to even things at 24-24, but Hofstra would score the next two to take the frame.
Seton Hall could not build on the late surge from the first game, and the Pride coasted to a 25-16 set two win.
In the third set, the Pirates came out strong out of the gate and took a 5-2 early lead. However, Hofstra refused to go away and knotted things at 12-12. SHU responded by tacking on four straight points and rode seven Osmun kills in the set for a 25-16 win to keep the match going.
The fourth set went back-and-forth that saw the score tied eight times and two lead changes. With the score even at 18-18, a Savannah Benton kill put the Pride up for good as they took the final frame, 25-21.
Seton Hall will host UMBC in its first match of the SHU Invitational on Friday, September 17, at 8:00 p.m. Western Michigan will take on Northeastern in match one of the tournament at 6:00 p.m.
