SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake) had 19 kills and 16 digs to lead four Pirates with double-doubles in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-6, 23-25, 25-21) win over UMBC on the opening night of the Seton Hall Invitational.
Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) rang up 18 kills and 12 digs for the Pirates (4-8), while sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 11 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) totaled 52 assists and 14 digs.
Sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had 10 kills, while freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) came up with a game-high 20 digs. Sabrina Hoeks led the Retrievers (4-6) with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Set one was tight from the get-go, with the Hall eventually taking a 20-16 lead after an Osmun kill and two errors by Hoeks. After UMBC cut it to 22-20, DeVries came up with a point, and the Retrievers gave up the last two points on errors to allow the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the match.
Seton Hall completely dominated set two, posting a .533 hitting average and a perfect sideout percentage. An ace from Trudeau, three kills by Osmun and two by Matusiak made it 6-0 and forced a UMBC timeout. The Pirates never relented, with Osmun totaling eight kills in the set to help the home team to a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
After dropping set three, the Hall bounced back in the fourth. Trailing 11-7, Osmun capped a three-point run with a kill to get the Pirates back within one. Matusiak tied the score at 12 moments later, and an attack error by Ali Goc gave Seton Hall a lead it would not relinquish. The Retrievers got within one on several occasions, but points from Hugeback and DeVries eventually put the match away.
In the opening match of the Invitational, Western Michigan dropped Northeastern in three sets. The Pirates take on Western Michigan at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday before ending the night with Northeastern at 5:30 p.m.
