UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Seton Hall volleyball team defeated Colgate in the final game of the Hampton Inn Classic hosted by Penn State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 27-25), on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Pirates (2-4) dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-17) match to Virginia Commonwealth.
Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was the story of the Hall's win as she registered 18 kills on her way to an All-Tournament selection. Sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 kills, senior Megan Murison (Woodridge, Ill.) had 33 assists and 10 digs, and freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had 19 digs.
Sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) added five kills and 15 digs.
The Hall got out to a 6-4 lead on a Trudeau kill and an attack error from Colgate's Casey Ritt. The Raiders went on a run to take an 11-8 lead, and they stayed in front all the way to 21-18 before the Pirates rallied. Osmun and Trudeau came up with kills as the Pirates evened the score at 21, and three straight kills by Hugeback eventually ended the set at 25-22.
After losing the first point, Seton Hall would not trail again in set two. With the score knotted at eight, an Osmun kill and a bevy of errors by Colgate gave the Pirates a 15-11 lead. After leading by as many as six, the Hall let Colgate get to within 21-20 before Osmun and Trudeau came up with points that sparked the team to a 25-21 win.
Colgate led early in set three, but Osmun came alive with back-to-back kills to make it 10-8 in favor of the Pirates. The Raiders rallied to a 15-12 advantage before Osmun led another charge, culminating in an 18-18 tie after her kill. With a 24-22 lead, the Pirates gave up three straight points before an Osmun kill evened it up at 25. Following a Colgate error, Hugeback slammed one to the floor to give the Hall the 27-25 win and three-set sweep.
The Pirates hit .223 in the victory, with Osmun checking it at a .267 clip.
In the first game of the day, the Pirates fell behind 5-0 before rallying behind Osmun for four straight points. After tying the game at eight, Seton Hall pushed out to a 12-8 lead behind kills from Hugeback and Sekulova. The Pirates wouldn't trail again until consecutive kills by Kristin Boyd gave VCU a 22-20 edge, and the Rams closed out the first set on a point from Mariel Frey.
A tough start to set two saw the Hall fall behind 6-2, and the Rams controlled the set on their way to a 21-15 lead. The Pirates suddenly rallied behind the serve of Murison, whose two aces capped an 8-0 run that saw the Hall take a two-point lead. With a 24-23 lead, VCU got a stroke of luck as an overpass by Ciara Brown just caught the line to even the match. Osmun answered with a kill to make it 25-24, but a point from Frey and two attack errors sealed the Pirates' fate.
The Rams never trailed in set three after taking a 3-2 lead.
