SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 deficit to beat St. John's in five sets (14-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-9) in a crucial match on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (16-12, 7-6) can clinch their third straight BIG EAST Championship berth with a win against Connecticut tomorrow afternoon in Walsh Gym.
Senior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) led all players with 22 kills and added 13 digs. Sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) posted her first career double-double with 31 digs and 10 assists. Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a career-high with 14 kills and tied a personal-best with 44 assists.
Slow starts in the first and second sets allowed the Red Storm (10-20, 1-12) to take the commanding lead in the match. Seton Hall began to find its rhythm late in set two, tying the score on three occasions, foreshadowing its comeback.
St. John's still began to pull away, 19-15, in the third set before the Pirates rattled off a 6-1 run to take a one-point lead. Paulina Piegza put the Storm ahead, 23-22, but that would be the last point they would score in the set. A kill by Matusiak and a block assist with Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) highlighted the final three points as SHU stayed alive.
The Pirates led by a small margin most of the way in the fourth set until three-straight Darlene Ramdin kills evened the score, 18-18. After a timeout, the Hall strung together a 6-1 run to finish the set and force the deciding game.
The fifth set was all Pirates as they raced out to a 9-4 lead on the strength of three Matusiak spikes. Junior Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) sealed the come-from-behind victory with her 14th kill of the afternoon.
After Seton Hall's match against the Huskies, the University will honor seniors Meghan Bonk (Hockessin, Del.), Matusiak and Wrobel.
