Individual members of the Seton Hall women's golf program finished the month of July in strong fashion. Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas), and newcomers McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), all notched impressive performances in tournament play.
Cantú, owner of the second-lowest stroke average for the Pirates last year, won the Houston Golf Association Eddie Burke, Sr. Young Houstonian by a notable five strokes. The sophomore fired a 76-70-77-223 on the Memorial Park Golf Course.
"With the injuries that Christina has faced over the past year, it's great to see her healthy and playing so well," second year Head Coach Sarah Doell said. "I know that she's worked very hard this summer to recover from some back pain and her performance in this event shows that she is on the right track."
Cutter finished 16th at The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships with a 75-80-76-72-303 in the four-round event. The Optimist is hosted at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida with over 100 junior golfers from all over the world competing for the title.
"Last week's performance is the latest in what has been a really strong overall summer for McKenzie," Doell said. "She rode the confidence gained from a second place finish at the PGA Calloway event in State College into The Optimist and had another impressive showing."
Kruse fired a career-low 71 in the final round of the AJGA - Lockton tournament to finish with an 80-82-71-233. Her third round performance enabled her to jump 10 spots to finish in fifth place. The event, hosted in her hometown, was her last junior event of the summer before she makes her way to South Orange to begin her career as a Pirate.
"Ali's confidence, swing and short game has improved tremendously over the past year and a half," Doell said. "I know the time, effort and patience that she has committed to her golf game will continue to pay off when her collegiate career begins this fall."
Seton Hall will tee off the 2011 fall season at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa., Sept. 10-11.
