SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched her 12th double-double of the season as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16) victory over Syracuse on Sunday.
Manthorpe tallied a season-high 17 kills to go with 12 digs in the winning effort.
The victory evens the Pirates' BIG EAST record at 4-4 and is only the second this season after losing the first set.
Freshman Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) had another strong effort. She tallied a career-high 13 kills with an impressive .550 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched her sixth straight double-double and team-leading 14th of the season with 36 assists and 12 digs. She narrowly missed her seventh triple-double, finishing with eight kills.
Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) picked up 11 kills in a spirited effort despite battling a lingering knee injury.
Junior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) showed her usual strong defensive prowess with a match-high 33 digs.
Syracuse (9-13, 1-6) broke out early in set one, trying to establish the tone of the match, and grabbing an early 7-3 lead. The set went back and forth as the teams tied eight times before Seton Hall jumped out to a 20-17 lead. Syracuse however, responded with a 6-1 run to take a 23-21 lead and edged the Pirates, 25-23, to win set one.
With the score tied at five in set two, Seton Hall scored four straight to take a 9-5 lead. The Pirates held the lead for most of the second set until Monika Salkute's kill tied the set at 20. But Seton Hall scored the next three points and five of the final seven points to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 victory in set two.
Using the momentum off their set two victory, the Pirates never trailed in set three. With the score tied at 16, Seton Hall scored four of the next five points to take a 20-17 lead. Syracuse responded however, and Emily Betteridge's kill tied the set at 21. The Pirates had a run left in them as well though, and scored the final four points of the set to win, 25-21, and take a two-sets-to-one lead.
Seton Hall (16-5, 4-4) dominated set four. With the Pirates trailing 2-1, they scored four straight points to grab a 5-2 lead and never looked back. Olivia Trudeau's (Shell Beach, Calif.) ace capped a 5-0 Pirates run to give them a 16-10 lead. Ahead 22-16, Seton Hall tallied the final three points of the set to win, 25-16, and take the match, three-sets-to-one.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, October 19 when they host in-state rival Rutgers at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Seton Hall will be hosting its Dig Pink event that evening and raising funds to support the Side Out Foundation and fight cancer.
