BRONX, N.Y. – The Seton Hall cross country squads returned to the course on Friday, competing for the first time since taking home a pair of top-three team finishes at the Asics-Embry Riddle Classic on Saturday, September 22.
Earlier today, the men’s and women’s teams traveled to Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, the site of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship, to participate in the Metropolitan Championships.
The SHU women ran to a sixth place finish in the 12-team field, an improvement of five spots over their finish last year and their first top-10 at the “Mets” since 2009-10. Senior Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) was once again the team’s top performer, posting a 5K time of 19:55.94 to place 22nd out of 123 female competitors.
"I think as a team, we all went out there and put our best foot forward and came out with good results," Rolle said post-race.
Junior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) recorded the team’s second –fastest time for the third consecutive meet, coming in 36th overall after crossing the line in 20:25.34. Sophomore Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) clocked in less than three seconds later, finishing in 20:28.02 and taking 37th place.
Freshman Amanda Quaglia (Reading, Pa.) has now scored in her first five outings as a Pirate, finishing in 41st position in a time of 20:41.90. In her first meet since setting a personal record at the Asics-Embry Riddle, junior Kristen May (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed to the team score once again, running a 21:50.91 to occupy 61st place. The group represents the same five women that scored when SHU last ran two weeks ago.
The Seton Hall women finished with a collective score of 197, nine points ahead of conference rival St. John’s in the seventh position. Columbia fielded six top-10 finishers including the individual champion on their way to capturing the team crown as well, ending the day with a final score of 18 points.
On the men’s side, senior Jared Hanko (Montville, N.J.) led the way for the 14th consecutive meet, finishing 31st out of 111 entrants with an 8K mark of 27:38.76.
Like Rolle and Eddings, Hanko and Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia) have formed a formidable 1-2 punch for The Hall this season. Johnston has now followed Hanko across the line for SHU in all five meets this season after finishing Friday’s race in 28:31.57 and placing 47th in the process.
Freshman Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) finished third on the team for the second straight meet and registered his fourth consecutive scoring time, coming across in 29:05.96 to finish 51st.
Jacob Bast (St. Louis, Mo.), another first year competitor, also picked up his fourth scoring time of the season, ending the day in 58th position after registering a time of 29:53.64. Junior Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) rounded out the team scoring, coming in two spots later (30:19.25).
The Seton Hall men were also competing against 11 other programs, finishing in ninth place with a cumulative score of 247. NYU was crowned team champions with a final tally of 50 points.
Both cross country teams will stride into Easton, Pa. next Saturday, October 13 to take part in the Leopard Invitational hosted by Lafayette College. The meet is the final competitive appearance for Seton Hall prior to the 2013 BIG EAST Championships on October 26.
