STATE COLLEGE, PA. – On a brisk day in central Pennsylvania, the Seton Hall cross country programs toed the line for the second time in three weeks as they competed at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships.
The women’s team turned in a 27th place finish in the 6K race that started the day, followed by a 22nd place performance by the men’s team in the subsequent 10K competition.
Senior Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) extended her streak as the team’s top finisher to double-digits, crossing the line first for SHU for the 10th consecutive race. Rolle ended the day with a time of 23:21, a mark that was good enough for 130th place out of 215 female finishers.
A consistent scorer for the Pirates throughout her freshman campaign, Amanda Quaglia (Reading, Pa.) was the next team member across the line, finishing second on the squad for the first time in her career. Quaglia shaved more than a minute off her 6K time from the BIG EAST Championships, finishing in 23:39 to occupy 139th place.
11 runners finished in between Quaglia and sophomore Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.). With a 151st place time of 23:54, Migton claimed a top-three spot in the Seton Hall lineup for the second year in a row at the Regionals.
Another repeat scorer from 2011 was junior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.). Eddings has ranked among the team’s top-five in every meet since the start of her sophomore season, and on Friday, finished fourth on the squad with a final mark of 24:02 (159th).
Making a return to Seton Hall’s scoring group in her first trip to the Regional was freshman Alex Ryan (Aurora, Colo.). Ryan began the season by finishing fifth on the team in each of the first three events of the season, and accomplished the feat for a fourth time earlier this afternoon. Ryan’s 6K time of 25:18 was the fastest she has recorded in a Seton Hall uniform, landing her in 193rd place overall.
Junior Kristen May (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Young (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) rounded out the SHU lineup with times of 25:33 (199th) and 26:08 (203rd) respectively.
Penn State (61) claimed a narrow team victory over Georgetown (63) while Villanova’s Nicky Akande took the women’s individual title with a time of 20:14.
Seton Hall’s team score of 762 placed the Pirates ahead of NJIT, St. Francis (Pa.), Maryland-Eastern Shore and Delaware State.
On the men’s side, The Hall’s team score of 671 was better than Lafayette, St. Francis (Pa.) and Loyola (MD), and was just two points shy of Robert Morris in 21st.
The Pirates arrived at their final mark behind Jared Hanko (Montville, N.J.) who paced the squad for the 16th consecutive race. His 10K time of 33:18 was over a minute faster than his previous recorded personal-best and earned him a 110th place finish among 170 male competitors who completed the race.
Competing for the first time at 10,000 meters as a collegian, freshman Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) placed second on the team for the second straight event, clocking in at 33:31 to finish 116th. With the result, Flannery has now scored in the team’s last seven outings and has ranked among the team’s top-three performers in five straight races.
Sophomore Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored for SHU for the second time in as many trips to the Regionals. After placing fourth on the team as a freshman, Orner picked up the Pirates’ third fastest time of the day and placed 146th with a career-best 10K time of 34:49.
Seton Hall’s final two scorers, freshman Jacob Bast (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Cory Hellwig (Vernon, N.J.), finished back-to-back in 159th and 160th place. Bast posted a time of 35:52 while Hellwig crossed three seconds later, ending his final Regionals appearance with his quickest 10K time as a Pirate.
Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia) and Tony Cramond (Monroe, Conn.) also competed for SHU. Johnston crossed in 36:55 while Cramond ended with 37:33 mark.
Georgetown (56) edged Villanova (57) by the slimmest of margins to claim the team championship while Temple’s Travis Mahoney earned regional championship distinction with a time of 30:24.
Each Seton Hall squad will conclude the 2012 season next weekend. The teams will make a third trip of the year to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to compete in the ECAC (women) and ICAAAA (men) Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17.
