SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Head Coach Sara Doell announced the release of the 2013 women's golf spring schedule on Tuesday. The Pirates will play in five events including the 2013 BIG EAST Championship, April 21-23, in Reunion, Fla.
This spring will be only the program's sixth in existence, but the Pirates are coming off a historic fall season, which the team registered five top-5 finishes in five tournaments, including a team victory at the Rutgers Invitational.
"After a very strong fall, this team has gained confidence that will carry them through the off-season and into the spring," Doell said.
Seton Hall will open the season with the annual Spring Break trip. This year the Pirates will again visit the Orlando, Fla. area and participate in a three-team event with Long Island and Yale on March 9 at Mountain Lake Country Club.
"We start off the spring season with a training trip to Florida where we'll practice and prepare for the season," Doell said. "It is a great week to work on swing mechanics, short games and to gain confidence. At the end of the week, we will compete in a match play event with LIU and Yale."
After returning from Spring Break, the Pirates will participate in the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla. at the Plantation Inn Golf Resort. This is the third straight season that Seton Hall has played in this event. Last spring, the Pirates tied for ninth among a field of 19 teams. Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) led the Pirates with a 25th place finish and a 15-over-par, 74-78-79-231.
Seton Hall will take on the Hoya Invitational for a third straight year, April 8-9, at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md. Last year, the Pirates placed ninth at the event. Cantύ again led the team and fired the low round of the tournament for Seton Hall on the final day of competition, posting a one-over-par, 73, to lead the Pirates and finish in a tie for 16th place individually with a three-round tally of 241.
A new tournament on the schedule will be the Brown Bear Invitational, April 14-15, at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I.
"This is the first year that we will be travelling to Rhode Island to play in the Brown Bear Invitational," Doell said. "Rhode Island Country Club is a beautiful venue and is a fair test of golf. The field is strong and includes several Ivy League schools and strong Northeast schools. This event will be a great way for us to prepare for the BIG EAST Championship."
Seton Hall will conclude the spring season with the aforementioned BIG EAST Championship, April 21-23, at Reunion Resort in Reunion, Fla. The Pirates have taken huge steps in the last two years in this marquee event. In their first year, SHU finished a distant last, only to move up to a very respectable fourth place last spring. Both Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) and Cantú had strong performances for the Pirates. Basalone placed 11th at 15-over-par, while Cantú finished 13th at 18-over-par.
"Last year, we proved to be strong members of the BIG EAST Conference after finishing fourth in the Championship, with USF edging out Notre Dame by a stroke to win the event. At this point in the year, we are ranked third in the Conference, ahead of last year's champions, USF. Only Louisville and Notre Dame are ranked ahead of us. It's a strong indicator of what this team can accomplish if we stay on this path of excellence."
