SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team rolled to its eighth straight victory with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) shut out of Morgan State in the final game of the 2012 Seton Hall Invitational on Saturday.
The victory improves the Pirates to 11-1 on the season, their best start since 1996. Their eight-game winning streak is the longest since 2003.
Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) again led the way for Seton Hall. The sophomore finished with a match-high 11 kills to go with nine digs, just missing her eighth double-double of the season. For her efforts, Manthorpe was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Joining Stacey Manthorpe on the All-Tournament Team was her sister Shelbey and senior Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Ngebui Chafeh of Morgan State as well as Stephanie McFadden and Melissa Rigo of Stony Brook were also received All-Tournament recognition.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched her seventh double-double of the season with a match-high 27 assists to go with 11 digs. She finished three kills shy of her fifth triple-double of the season.
Freshman Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) had another strong match for Seton Hall. She was second on the team with eight kills and led the Pirates with a .545 attack percentage.
Seton Hall jumped all over Morgan State from the get-go, scoring 16 of the match's first 21 points. The Bears never made a noticeable run and dropped the first set, 25-13.
Morgan State (0-11) came out much stronger in set two, playing Seton Hall even for much of the set's first half. The set was tied six times early on and as late as 8-to-8, but the Pirates took a 9-8 lead on a kill by Grammer and gradually expanded it. A kill by Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) gave the Pirates their largest lead of the second set, 22-14. Seton Hall never looked back and won set two, 25-17.
Set three was also close early on, but the Pirates pulled away late for a 25-19 victory. MVP Stacey Manthorpe scored five of her 11 kills in the third set.
The Pirates will return to action in one week, Saturday, Sept. 22, when they open up the BIG EAST portion of their schedule with Pittsburgh. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
