HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team handed Hofstra its first loss of the season after a dominating, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-17), victory on Tuesday night. The Pirates are now 5-1 on the season, marking the best start for the program since 1996 when they began 10-0.
The Pirates offense was clicking on all cylinders, converting at a .349 clip for the match. After a close first set, Seton Hall controlled the second and third to earn its first sweep of the year.
Junior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) posted 15 digs and now has 1,209 for her career to move past Sarah Osmun for fourth on the all-time list. Freshman Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) led the balanced attack with nine kills.
The teams swapped points to begin the first set until a mini 4-1 spurt gave Seton Hall a 15-12 lead. That cushion would be all the Pirates would need as they did not let the Pride (8-1) mount any momentum and took the set, 25-21.
Seton Hall dominated the second set, using a 6-2 run to pull away midway through and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three saw the Pirates jump out to a 9-5 advantage, and SHU never looked back to complete the three-game triumph.
The Pirates will wrap up a 10-match road swing with three matches at the URI Tournament over the weekend. SHU opens the slate against Canisius on Friday, September 7, at 11:00 a.m.
