WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team fell behind early and couldn't recover, falling at Georgetown, 74-52, Wednesday at the Verizon Center.
Junior Brian Oliver (Glassboro, N.J.) led Seton Hall with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Aaron Cosby (Louisville, Ky.) was the only other Pirate to score in double-figures. He finished with 12 points.
Georgetown entered the game with the reputation as one of the better defensive teams in the BIG EAST. They proved their defensive prowess right out of the gate, forcing eight early turnovers to take a 20-4 lead to start the game. Seton Hall however, would go on a 9-0 run, with six of the points scored by Cosby, to cut the Hoyas lead to seven at 20-13 with 8:16 left before halftime.
Down 10, Aaron Geramipoor (Manchester, England) scored three straight points for Seton Hall to again cut the Hoyas lead to seven, 23-16, with 4:38 to go in the first half.
The Hoyas would extend their lead and take a 32-22 lead into halftime. The stout Georgetown defense forced 14 Seton Hall turnovers in the first half and held the Pirates to 38.1% shooting from the floor, including 2-for-11 from three-point range.
Georgetown started the second half on a 12-2 run, to extend their lead to 44-24 with 14:34 remaining. In the process Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) and Gene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) picked up their fourth fouls of the game, setting the tone for a foul-plagued half.
Seton Hall wouldn't get closer than 17 points the rest of the way.
Three Pirates ended up fouling out, Mobley, Teague and Haralds Karlis (Riga, Latvia) as Seton Hall committed a season-high 29 fouls. Their 25 turnovers was one shy of their season-high 26 set at LSU on Nov. 29.
Backup center Kevin Johnson (Compton, Calif.) had a solid game for the Pirates off the bench. The freshman scored seven points, on the strength of 5-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line, and grabbed two rebounds in just 12 minutes.
Otto Porter led Georgetown with 20 points and four steals.
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, February 2 when they host Cincinnati at the Prudential Center. Game-time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. At halftime, Seton Hall will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its BIG EAST Champion 1992-93 team.
