NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) was named BIG EAST Volleyball Player of the Week on Tuesday. Freshman Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) earned Weekly Honor Roll recognition.
Manthorpe spearheaded a Seton Hall team that went 2-1 over the weekend, including four-set victories over Creighton and DePaul. In a dominant three-day performance, she tallied two triple-doubles, and nearly recorded the program's first-ever quadruple-double. On Friday, Seton Hall lost a hard-fought, five-set match to first-place Marquette. Manthorpe recorded a triple-double with 48 assists, 14 kills and 11 digs. On Saturday, she was instrumental in Seton Hall's upset of preseason BIG EAST favorite Creighton, tallying 36 assists, 11 digs, nine kills and a career-high eight blocks. Manthorpe finished the weekend with 42 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs in a victory over DePaul on Sunday.
It's the first time this season and the second time of her career that Manthorpe has earned the distinction of Player of the Week.
Schroeder saved her best offensive production for the best completion of the season. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter recorded a career-high 17 kills, with just four attack errors, and an impressive .342 attack percentage against Marquette on Friday. Schroeder followed that match with a nine-kill performance vs. Creighton and an eight-kill effort against DePaul. The BIG EAST honor is the first of her young career.
Xavier's Abbey Bessler was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Those joining Schroeder on the Weekly Honor Roll include Butler's Belle Obert, Creighton's Jess Bird, Marquette's Elizabeth Koberstein and St. John's Aleksandra Wachowicz.
Manthorpe, Schroeder and the rest of the Pirates will complete the 2013 season when it hosts St. John's on Friday, Nov. 22. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The match is also Senior Night for Seton Hall. The Pirates will honor lone senior Alyssa Warren immediately following the match in a special ceremony.
