
Warren, Shelbey Lead Volleyball Past St. John's

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.), the lone senior on the Seton Hall women's volleyball team, recorded a team-high 17 digs in her final match as the Pirates defeated St. John's, 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 26-24), on Friday in the team's season finale.
Warren finishes her career with 2,381 digs more than 400 digs more than the second-highest total in school history. In a special post-match ceremony a tearful Warren was honored by Seton Hall with her family by her side.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) also closed the 2013 season with a bang. The junior recorded her 10th triple-double of the season with 39 assists, 15 digs and 13 kills in Seton Hall's four-set victory. Manthorpe also had seven blocks in another spectacular all-around effort.
Junior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) reached double-figures in kills for a sixth straight match. The outside hitter had a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs.
In all, five Pirates reached double-figures in digs. Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) and Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had 12 and 11 digs respectively.
Seton Hall (16-15, 7-9) scored six of the first seven points to start the match. St. John's cut the lead to two, four times in the set, but couldn't get closer. The Pirates pulled away late and won set one, 25-19. Shelbey Manthorpe nearly had a double-double in the first set alone, recording eight kills and nine assists.
Set two was much closer, but the Pirates again pulled away late. Clinging to a 16-15 lead, Seton Hall finished the set with a 9-2 run to win, 25-17, and take a commanding two-sets-to-none match advantage.
With their backs against the wall, St. John's showed renewed vigor in set three. The set featured six lead changes and 10 ties. A kill by Shelbey Manthorpe gave Seton Hall a 14-10 lead, but St. John's responded with a 5-1 run to take a 16-15 advantage. Stacey Manthorpe again gave Seton Hall a three point cushion at 19-16, but the Red Storm scored five of the next seven points to tie the set at 21. The Pirates staved off one St. John's set point at 24-23, but ultimately succumbed to the Red Storm, 26-24.
The Pirates jumped out to a big lead to begin set four, scoring six of the first seven points. St. John's however, responded with a 6-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. With the score tied at 10, Seton Hall scored three straight points to take a 13-10 advantage. Trailing 21-19, St. John's scored the next four points to take a 23-21 lead. But Seton Hall scored the next two points to tie the set at 23. St. John's Karin Palgutova put the Red Storm in set point with a kill, but the Pirates scored the final three points of the set to win set four, 26-24, and complete a four-set match victory.
Seton Hall finished the 2013 season playing its best volleyball of the season. The Pirates won four of its last five matches, including the final three.
