
Tennis Cruises Past Towson, 6-1

ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The Seton Hall tennis team picked up its first win of the spring on Saturday, easing past Towson by a 6-1 margin at the United States Naval Academy.
The Pirates (1-4) captured the doubles point for the first time in 2013, and went on to take five of six singles matches en route to victory.
SHU bested the Tigers in the top-two doubles spots, earning the point with a pair of 8-3 wins.
Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) earned their fourth victory inn six dual matches in 2012-13 by topping Ayana Dow and Ariel Burke from the #1 position. With Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) again sidelined due to injury, Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) teamed with Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) in #2 doubles, defeating Andrea Samlin and Nisha Shah.
With the point decided, the third doubles match was not completed.
In singles, thre Pirates swept the top-four positions and scored another point at #6 thanks to a win by Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia).
Sher dropped only one game against Dow in their #1 singles match, earning her team-leading fourth dual match victory and 13th overall win of the season.
Freshman Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) also needed only two sets to put away Burke at #3, becoming the fifth Pirate to reach the 10-win mark in 2012-13 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Rodriguez overpowered Mariah Burke in a third straight-set victory for The Hall on the day, improving to 2-1 in dual match play with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Portela and Shoemaker added three-set victories for the Pirates, scoring at #2 and #4 respectively.
Despite dropping the first set 4-6, Portela bounced back to take the second 6-2. In the decider, she took 10 of 11 points to secure a 4-6, 6-2, 10-1 win. The junior now stands at 2-0 in three-set matches in the spring after the comeback effort.
Shoemaker eased her way to a 6-1 first set victory against Lorena Ferrer, but fell in the second, 4-6. With the match on the line, Shoemaker controlled the third set, winning 6-2 for her second three-set win in her last three matches.
Shoemaker and Rodriguez each now have 11 total wins this season, tying them with Keenan for the second-highest total on the squad.
The Pirates will be back in action this afternoon when they take on Navy. Match time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
