NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her 13th career triple-double, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Colgate, 3-2 (25-21, 14-25, 19-25, 25-19, 10-15), Friday as part of the 2013 Yale University Tournament.
For the weary, injury-plagued Pirates the match was their third straight that has gone five sets (1-2).
Manthorpe tallied a team-high 39 assists to go with 22 digs and 10 kills for her first triple-double of the 2013 season. Her sister, Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs.
Sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led Seton Hall with a team-high 17 kills and an impressive .353 attack percentage. Classmate Kayla Kohler (Whitehall, Pa.) was a fourth Pirate in double-figures in kills, recording 12.
Reigning BIG EAST Libero of the Year, Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.), tallied a match-high 26 digs.
Seton Hall (1-3) started fast and jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set on the strength of three kills by Hansen. The Pirates maintained the lead and it grew to 16-11 on a kill by Stacey Manthorpe. The Hall never trailed and took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-21 victory in set one.
Kohler's kill gave the Pirates an early 3-1 lead in set two, but Colgate regrouped and the early goings were relatively even. Another kill by Kohler, pulled Seton Hall to within one point of Colgate at 14-13, but the Raiders closed the set on an 11-1 run to win set two in convincing fashion, 25-14.
In set three, Seton Hall took an early 2-1 lead, but Colgate (4-0) quickly tied the score at two and didn't trail again for the remainder of the set. Kohler's kill late in the match closed the Pirates to within one point at 20-19, but they would get no closer. The Raiders won set three, 25-19, to take a two-sets-to-one lead in the match.
The Pirates stormed back however, in set four. Seton Hall never trailed and took a commanding 16-8 lead on a kill by Shelbey Manthorpe, which prompted a Colgate timeout. The Raiders closed the deficit to three points, but got no closer as Seton Hall tied the match at two sets apiece with a 25-19 set four victory.
With the score tied at six in the fifth and decisive set, Colgate scored four straight points and never looked back. The Raiders won set five, 15-10, and the match, three-sets-to-two.
Sophomore Kacey Richards (Macedon, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut after a lengthy battle with a back injury.
Seton Hall will continue play as part of the Yale University Tournament on Saturday. The Pirates will face Missouri at 11:00 a.m. and host Yale at 7:00 p.m.
