NEWARK, N.J. - In a game defined by runs, it was Butler that scored 13 of the final 15 points to upend the Seton Hall men's basketball team 64-57 at the Prudential Center on Wednesday.
Seton Hall (12-9, 3-5) shot just 32.3 percent (10-for-31) from the field in the second half and totaled a season-low four makes from the free throw line in the contest. Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) led all scorers with 20 points and added six steals to push his BIG EAST leading total to 53 in 17 appearances this season. The senior has now also reached the 20-point mark in three of the last four outings and is averaging 21.5 points and 3.2 steals per game over the stretch.
Junior forward Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) came off the bench to score 10 points and grab a game-high 10 rebounds to go with five blocks in 25 minutes, notching his second double-double of the year and the seventh of his career. Senior center Eugene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) chipped in 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and also pulled down six boards.
A Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) 3-pointer put the Pirates ahead by four points with 4:38 to play, but Butler sophomore Kellen Dunham responded with two 3-pointers of his own, moving the Bulldogs back in front, 57-55, two minutes later. After an empty possession on the offensive end, The Hall came up with a stop and a quick outlet from Mobley off the rebound led to a run-out for Gibbs who got to the rim and finished a layup to level the score with less than 90 seconds remaining.
Butler senior Khyle Marshall, who scored a team-high 13 points, powered his way to a bucket from in close on the next trip down the floor, putting the Bulldogs on top for good.
After going into the locker room down one at 34-33, the Pirates reeled off a 13-2 run that was punctuated by an Edwin layup that gave Seton Hall a 46-40 edge with 12:46 to go. The Pirates managed just two points over the next six minutes however, allowing Butler to climb back into the contest.
Following a first half in which they turned the ball over only three times and built a 9-0 advantage in points off turnovers, the Pirates totaled seven giveaways in the final 20 minutes, which led to eight Butler points in the period. The turnovers disrupted an offensive flow that saw the Pirates shoot 50 percent from the field (13-for-26) in a back-and-forth first half.
The first seven minutes of the game featured a breakneck pace and saw the lead change hands nine times - the last of which came on a fastbreak layup by Butler freshman Andrew Chrabascz that gave Butler a 14-13 advantage. Edwin, Teague and Mobley combined to score the first 20 points the Pirates put on the board, including the first four of a 7-0 run that was capped by a Brian Oliver (Glassboro, N.J.) trey to level the score with 7:15 to go before the break.
Seton Hall's next seven points came courtesy of Edwin. The senior converted on three-straight field goal attempts to help keep The Hall within striking distance in the final minutes of the opening frame. Over the first 20 minutes, he scored 15 of the team's 33 points; finding the mark on six of his eight shots, including all three he fired from beyond the arc.
Elijah Brown scored 12 points in 18 minutes as a reserve to help Butler (12-9, 2-7) claim the inaugural meeting between the two programs scoring its first-ever BIG EAST road victory in the process. Junior forward Kameron Woods finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in the effort as well.
Next up for The Hall is a trip to the Cintas Center in Cincinnati as the Pirates are slated to visit another new conference foe in the Xavier Musketeers. Tip-off is scheduled Noon and with a live national telecast available on the CBS Sports Network. Seton Hall's radio team of Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the call for 970 AM (WNYM) and the Pirate Sports Network on SHUPirates.com.
