PREVIEW
Seton Hall will wrap up the 2014 regular season this weekend when it travels to Georgetown on Friday for an 8:00 p.m. start, and finishes up at Creighton on Sunday. Match time is 1:00 p.m. ET at Creighton.
Seton Hall increased its winning streak to six matches with a pair of wins last weekend. In winning two matches, the Pirates clinched their first BIG EAST Tournament berth since 2011. Seton Hall cannot finish lower than third place in the final standings and can still win a share of the regular season title. In order to become regular season champs, Seton Hall must win both of its matches this weekend and have Creighton lose both of its matches.
On Friday, Seton Hall defeated Marquette, the defending BIG EAST champions, in four sets to avenge a four-set loss in Milwaukee earlier this season. Both Manthorpe sisters recorded double-doubles. Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a team-high 19 kills and 16 digs. Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had 42 assists and a season-high 24 digs. Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) also had a strong match with a season-high 16 kills and just one attack error. On Saturday, Senior Day, Seton Hall outlasted DePaul in five sets to clinch the BIG EAST Tournament. Four Pirates reached double-figures in kills, led by Stacey Manthorpe who had 22 kills and 16 digs for her 20th double-double of the season. Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) recorded a career-best 45 digs, tying the Seton Hall single-match record. Shelbey Manthorpe recorded a career-high 66 assists, the seventh-highest total in Pirates' history.
On Friday, Seton Hall will face Georgetown at McDonough Arena. The Pirates won their earlier meeting with the Hoyas, a four-set victory at Walsh Gym on Oct. 11. The Hoyas enter the contest having lost six straight matches, while The Hall has won six in a row. On Sunday, the Pirates will complete the regular season at Creighton. The Bluejays need just one win this weekend to win the regular season title outright. Creighton has won 10 straight matches since losing their only BIG EAST contest to Seton Hall on Oct. 10 in Walsh Gym.
TOP SETON HALL NOTES
WEEKLY AWARDS
Sophomore Tessa Fournier was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while senior Stacey Manthorpe was added to the Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 17. Fournier was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career after leading the Pirates to a pair of victories last week over BIG EAST opponents. Manthorpe earns Weekly Honor Roll recognition for the fifth time this season. The outside hitter picked up a pair of double-doubles, increasing her team lead in that category to 20 on the season.
DOWNING MARQUETTE
Seton Hall recorded its first victory over Marquette since 2009 with a four-set win on Nov. 14 at Walsh Gym. The teams split the season series, with both winning in four sets on their home floor. In fact, the teams scored exactly the same amount of points in the two matches combined.
CLINCHED
Seton Hall's victory over DePaul on Nov. 15 clinched its first BIG EAST Tournament berth since 2011. Seton Hall is guaranteed to finish no lower than third place in the conference this season. The top four will play for the championship in Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 28-29. Seton Hall can still win the regular season title, but it will need to sweep this weekend and have Creighton go 0-2.
RUBIN, SETON HALL LEAD NATION
One of the keys to Seton Hall's success this season has been the stellar defense of its front line. Seton Hall currently leads the nation in total blocks, while senior Ashani Rubin leads the nation in total blocks among all individual Division I players.
BIG ASSISTS
Senior Shelbey Manthorpe recorded a career-high 66 assists in Seton Hall's victory over DePaul on Nov. 15. The outburst ties for the seventh most assists in a single-match in Seton Hall history.
FOURNIER TIES RECORD
Tessa Fournier's strong sophomore season took another impressive step vs. DePaul on Nov. 15. The two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week recorded a career-high 45 digs in Seton Hall's five-set victory. In fact, her 45 digs ties the Pirates' single-match record. Fournier currently leads the BIG EAST with 5.53 digs per set.
