ST. THOMAS, USVI - Junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored a game-high 15 points as the Seton Hall men's basketball team held off Nevada, 68-60, in the opening round of the 2014 Ezybonds Global Payments U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Friday.
Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also scored in double-figures. Mobley finished with 12 points and four rebounds, while Carrington had 11 points off the bench in just 16 minutes.
Nine Pirates played at least 11 minutes in a game that Seton Hall led by as many as 19 points mid-way through the second half, but saw the lead cut to as few as six points late. Although Seton Hall shot just 59.3% from the free-throw line for the game, the Pirates were 5-for-6 from the line in the game's final 64 seconds to secure the victory.
Seton Hall (2-0) started quickly, passing well and playing stellar defense. Freshman Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted on layups in back-to-back possessions to give The Hall an early 8-2 advantage.
Nevada was called early and often for fouls and the Pirates found themselves in the bonus with 13:33 left before halftime. With Seton Hall ahead by only two, 12-10, Carrington connected on a three-pointer and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored on a fast-break layup to extend The Hall's lead to 17-10 at the under-12:00 timeout.
The Wolfpack cut Seton Hall's lead to 20-18, but Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) answered with a three-pointer. A pair of free throws by Rashed Anthony (Orangeburg, S.C.) and a layup by Carrington extended the Seton Hall run to 7-0 and provided The Hall with a 27-18 lead with 6:18 left in the first half.
A pair of free throws by Haralds Karlis (Riga, Latvia) gave Seton Hall its largest lead of the half, 37-24, with under two minutes left before the break, but a three-pointer by Nevada's D.J. Fenner with only 30 seconds remaining cut the lead to 10 points.
Seton Hall jumped on Nevada quickly to open the second half. Sina hit a three-pointer just 11 seconds into the second frame. Mobley scored seven straight points for Seton Hall, highlighted by a three-point play, to extend the Pirates' lead to 49-31 with 15:12 remaining.
The lead grew to as many as 19 points when Gibbs connected on a three-pointer to make the score 53-34 with 12:41 to play. With Seton Hall comfortably ahead 62-43, Nevada went on a 14-1 run to cut their deficit to just six points with 1:16 to go, but didn't get closer.
Seton Hall will continue play at the 2014 Ezybonds Global Payments Paradise Jam on Sunday, Nov. 23 when it plays Gardner Webb. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET. The game will again be broadcast live by CBS Sports Network on TV and will be heard on AM970 and WSOU FM on the radio.
