ST. THOMAS, USVI - Freshman Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) recorded his first career double-double as the Seton Hall men's basketball team downed Gardner-Webb, 85-67, on Sunday to advance to the Paradise Jam finals.
Delgado finished with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was the Pirates' leading scorer for a second straight game. The junior posted 16 points to go with five rebounds.
Freshman Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) enjoyed his best game as a collegian. The newcomer registered career-highs with 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals in 25 minutes off the bench.
Seton Hall (3-0) started quickly, trailing 3-2, the Pirates went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.). The Hall kept Gardner-Webb without a field goal for 6:20 until a put-back by Harold McBride cut the Pirates' lead to 13-6 with 13:00 remaining in the first half.
Sina finished the game with a season-high 14 points on the strength of 4-for-6 shooting from behind the three-point arc.
Sina's second three-pointer of the first half extended The Hall's lead to 24-14 with 6:41 left before the half, but Gardner-Webb's Tyler Strange scored on a layup, stole the inbound pass, and found the basket again to cut the Pirate lead to six. Free-throws by Rodriguez and Gibbs boosted The Hall's lead back to 10, and after a bucket by GW's Harold McBride, Gibbs connected on a three-pointer to give Seton Hall a 31-20 advantage with 4:06 left in the first half.
The Pirates' lead ballooned to 14 points, 36-22, when Gibbs' lob pass found a cutting Stephane Manga (Orleans, France) for an easy bucket.
After the Runnin' Bulldogs cut into Seton Hall's lead, Gibbs' second three-pointer of the half with 20 seconds left before halftime put the Pirates back up by 13 points. But Gardner-Webb's Tyler Strange hit a three-pointer of his own from well beyond the arc with three seconds left to send The Hall into the locker room with a 10 point lead, 39-29.
Gardner-Webb scored five of the first seven points out of the halftime break, but perhaps most alarming for Seton Hall was that Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) picked up fouls three and four in the half's first two minutes.
With Seton Hall leading by 10, the Pirates scored eight points in a 61-second span, highlighted by a three-pointer from Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and capped by a thunderous, breakaway dunk by Desi Rodriguez to give Seton Hall a 60-42 lead with 13:03 left to play. Gardner-Webb responded with an 11-1 run to cut the lead to just eight points with 9:04 to go.
The Pirates however, came roaring back. Over the span of the next 5:16, Seton Hall outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs, 20-4, to take a commanding 81-57 lead. From there, the Seton Hall lead was never less than 16 points.
Seton Hall will complete play at the 2014 Ezybonds Global Payments Paradise Jam on Monday, Nov. 24 when it plays Illinois State for the tournament championship. Game time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET. The game will again be broadcast live by CBS Sports Network on TV and will be heard on AM970 and WSOU FM on the radio.
