NEWARK, N.J. – Despite three Pirates finishing in double figures, led by 19 points from Budd Clark, the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell at home to DePaul on Wednesday night, 69-57.
Clark added five assists to his 19 points and connected on 7-of-12 shots from the floor. AJ Staton-McCray had a solid night with 13 points and a pair of made threes, while Tajuan Simpkins added 12 points in his second start of the season.
How it Happened
Seton Hall came out of the gates strong, connecting on five of its first six shots to take an early advantage. Elijah Fisher got the scoring started with a corner three just under two minutes into the game, followed minutes later by treys from Simpkins and Staton-McCray which helped The Hall to a six-point edge.
DePaul would chip away midway through the first half, eventually taking a lead as large as five with 1:42 left until halftime. Clark would maneuver his way to the basket to convert on a layup with 1:22 remaining in the first, cutting the deficit down to one possession. After a pair of Staton-McCray free throws trimmed it down to one, Simpkins would force a steal on the ensuing possession to give The Hall a chance to take the lead into the locker room. Staton-McCray came off a screen and found space to knock down a three with 28 seconds left in the first to take the lead into half, 35-33.
After halftime, the Pirates continues their strong shooting as buckets from Clark and Staton-McCray grew the lead to six, 39-33. After a couple Blue Demon buckets brought the visitors closer, Staton-McCray stemmed the tide with a tough and-one layup to give the Pirates a 44-38 lead with 15:50 remaining.
After the media break, DePaul used a 9-0 run to vault itself into the lead. The Pirates remained closed midway through the half, with a jumper from Parker pulling the hosts within one with 10:57 remaining, 47-46. The Pirates would briefly regain the lead with 5:29 left to play on a pair of Budd Clark free throws, 52-51, but the Blue Demons used a late run to stretch the lead to double digits and pull away with the win.
