NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Teammates Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) and Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) were added to the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
In a season of weekly awards for Seton Hall players, it's the first time that three Pirates have been honored in the same week.
Elia was utterly dominant in what was inarguably his best career start on Saturday at Central Connecticut State. The left-hander tossed his first career complete game and shutout, while striking out a career-high seven batters and walking just two. Elia scattered just four hits while going the distance in a 2-0 victory for Seton Hall. Elia improved to 3-2 this season and lowered his ERA to 2.79, fifth-lowest in the BIG EAST Conference.
Prevost's performance last week may have earned him BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week if Elia's outing wasn't so extraordinary. The Pirates' ace pitched eight scoreless innings, while scattering just two hits in Seton Hall's 8-0 victory at Iona on Friday. Prevost struck out a career-high 11 batters and walked just one. To date, the 6-foot-8 right-hander has more starts (seven) than walks (six) and is 7-0 with a conference-leading 1.45 ERA. This is the seventh consecutive week Prevost's performance has been recognized with a BIG EAST weekly award. He's earned Honor Roll recognition three times and been named Pitcher of the Week four times.
Weigel led all Seton Hall regular starters with a .429 batting average last week. The Pirates' leadoff man went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and a stolen base in Seton Hall's victory over Saint Peter's on Thursday. He went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk on Saturday at Central Connecticut State. Weigel reached base in all four games last week for the Pirates. The dynamic outfielder currently leads the BIG EAST in on-base percentage and runs scored, and is fourth with a .337 batting average.
Georgetown's Steve Anderson was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Those joining Prevost and Weigel on the Honor Roll include: Creighton's Matt Warren, Butler's Quincy Quintero and Georgetown's Matt Smith.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, April 1) it travels to in-state rival Rider. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
