MENDHAM, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team fell for the first time in five home matches on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to Rutgers at the Mendham Racquet Club.
The loss moves the Pirates to 10-8 on the season with two regular season matches remaining prior to the 2014 BIG EAST Championship. Rutgers improved to 13-4 this spring and the Scarlet Knights are now unbeaten in their last five appearances.
Sophomore Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) scored for The Hall at the sixth singles position, posting a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Farris Cunningham. It was the first dual match singles victory of the year from Landert who also improved to 8-8 as an individual in her second season as a Pirate.
Seton Hall's other victory came from the top doubles spot as Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) celebrated Senior Day with an 8-6 win against Lindsey Kayati and Vanessa Petrini. Portela and Sher now own a 10-4 record in #1 doubles matches and have recorded a team-high 18 victories as a team in 2013-14.
Sher nearly added another point from the first singles slot as she rebounded from a first set loss against Petrini to take the second, 6-4. The Rutgers senior prevailed in the decisive frame however, earning a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 triumph that closed the action for the afternoon.
Despite the setback, Sher still holds a 3-2 advantage all-time of Rutgers' top player.
Seton Hall will be back in action on Friday, April 11 when the team travels to Queens to take on BIG EAST rival St. John's in their final conference match of the season. Start-time is set for Noon.
