SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall University announced the induction of 34 student-athletes into the National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma, as part of a ceremony in held in the Walsh Library Rotunda Room on Thursday morning.
The impressive group of honorees joins 39 Seton Hall student-athletes who were inducted last May in a ceremony that recognized those who had fulfilled the requirements from 2011-2013. Among those honored were Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and John Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) - the Seton Hall Junior Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year - and fellow Seton Hall Academic All-Stars Sam Duncan (Tucson, Ariz.), Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) and Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) who each boast a GPA that ranks in the top-12 among all of the university's student-athletes.
The Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society was founded at DePauw University in 1996 as a student-athlete honor society. Its purpose is to recognize high academic achievers and sport letter winners at the collegiate level.
In order to achieve the distinction, the student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher, have achieved at least junior standing and be of exceptional moral character.
The stated purposes of the organization are to:
- Encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four year accredited colleges.
- To recognize outstanding academic achievements by intercollegiate varsity sport student-athletes.
- To encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics.
- To recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department and university.
- To mentor and provide leadership to other athletes.
The Class of 2014 is comprised 32 juniors and two seniors; representing 12 of Seton Hall's varsity teams. Each one of the university's 14 varsity squads features at least one member of Chi Alpha Sigma and these exemplary individuals are at the head of a SHU student-athlete population that currently holds a collective cumulative grade-point average of 3.279, the highest mark in school history.
