NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Teammate Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) earned Weekly Honor Roll distinction.
Cahill turned in arguably his best career start on in game two of Saturday's double-header vs. Xavier. The right-hander pitched a career-high 8.0 innings and gave up just two earned runs as the Pirates were able to complete a three-game sweep in a crucial series for BIG EAST Championship seedings. Cahill walked just two batters and struck out a career-high 11. His previous career-high in strikeouts was just five. Cahill improves to 9-1 and now has a 2.63 ERA.
It's the second time this season that Cahill has been honored with a BIG EAST weekly award. He was named to the Weekly Honor Roll on April 21. This is the first time Cahill has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Annunziata batted a team-high .417 in helping the Pirates to a perfect 3-0 week. The first baseman reached base at least twice in all three games. In game one of Saturday's double-header, Annunziata went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a hit-by-pitch. In game two, he went 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in. Annunziata is batting .351 and currently leads the BIG EAST in RBIs, doubles, total bases and slugging percentage. He also ranks among the conference's top five in hits and home runs.
Creighton's Mike Gerber was named Player of the Week. Those joining Annunziata on the Weekly Honor Roll include: St. John's Michael Donadio, Xavier's Daniel Rizzie and both Steve Anderson and Matt Smith of Georgetown.
Seton Hall will return to the diamond on Tuesday, May 13 when it hosts Fairfield at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
