West Virginia won its eighth straight match to improve to 8-1 on the young season.
Manthorpe led the Pirates with 10 kills and 11 digs. Her sister Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had 31 assists and eight digs.
Seton Hall and West Virginia combined for 10 ties and four lead changes in set one. Neither team led by more than three points throughout. With the set tied at 20, West Virginia scored twice to take a 22-20 lead. Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) drove home a pair of kills late to pull the Pirates to within one, 23-22, but her service error put the Mountaineers in set point and a block of a Stacey Manthorpe attack won the set for West Virginia.
The Pirates jumped out to a 6-3 lead to begin set two, but West Virginia responded by scoring five of the next six points to take an 8-7 advantage. With the score tied at 11, the Mountaineers scored five straight to extend their lead to 16-11, their largest lead of the match to that point. Back-to-back kills by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) and Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) cut the Mountaineers lead to 20-17. After a Mountaineers point pushed the score to 21-17, the Pirates scored four straight, the last two on kills by Schroeder, to tie the set at 21. Out of a timeout, West Virginia score two to pull ahead, 23-21, but the Pirates tied the score again on a pair of blocks. However, a service error by Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) put the Mountaineers in set point and a block on a Stacey Manthorpe attack gave set two to West Virginia, 25-23.
Seton Hall never led in set three. West Virginia scored six of the first seven points to begin set three to take a 6-1 early advantage. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe cut the Mountaineers lead to 13-10, but West Virginia responded with four straight points to take a commanding 17-10 lead. The Pirates cut the lead to 18-13, but didn't get closer, and fell, 25-16, in set three, losing the match in three sets.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it concludes the West Virginia Invitational with a match against St. Francis (Pa.) at 4:30 p.m.
