NEWARK, DEL. - The Seton Hall cross country program produced its second trophy-winning performance in as many weeks as the men's squad combined to take home the hardware from the 8K Delaware Invitational on Saturday.
One week after the women's side secured the program's first team victory with a win at the St. John's/Hofstra Fall Festival, the men's contingent countered with a memorable showing of their own.
At the front of the pack was freshman Jake Simon (Freehold, N.J.) who not only scored for the third consecutive meet to start his career but secured his first team-leading time with an 8K mark of 27:16.18 that was third-fastest among 108 male collegiate competitors.
Simon claimed the top spot on the team over senior Kevin Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) for the first time this season but Walsh was the next Pirate to cross the line; taking 11th-place overall with a new personal-best 8K time of 27:36.44. Walsh, who scored for the first time since his freshman year at the season-opening Monmouth XC Kickoff, joins Simon as the only two Pirates to place among the top-five on the squad in all three races this fall.
Also collecting a top-15 overall finish was John Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) who ranked third for The Hall after clocking in at 27:52.22, besting his previous best at the 8K distance by nearly 90 seconds. The performance was the second scoring effort of what has been a breakout senior campaign for John Walsh and he was followed by a pair of underclassmen who also earned their second appearance in the Pirates' top-five early in the season.
Freshman Jeff Larson (Yucca Valley, Calif.) posted a time of 27:59.70 that edged sophomore Sean Kip (Union, N.J.) for fourth among 17 Seton Hall runners by just under eight-tenths of a second. Both Larson and Kip also placed among the top-20 overall on the day.
Finishing just outside the scoring group for The Hall were sophomore Victor Ricci (Narragansett, R.I.) and junior Walter Grosenheider (Madison, Wisc.). Ricci registered his second-straight top-25 overall finish with a final mark of 28:16.01 while Grosenheider recorded the fifth top-25 time of his career, crossing the line in 28:18.82.
The Pirates will get a week off from competition before traveling to Daytona Beach, Fla. on Saturday, September 27 for the Asics-Embry Riddle Classic in the final tune-up for the championship season.
