The Pirates have won their last three matches via sweep and have run their consecutive sets won streak to 11.
Seton Hall (5-1) did a fine job of spreading around the offense as five Pirates registered at least five kills. Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led The Hall with nine kills. Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had eight kills and a season-high 17 digs.
Seton Hall jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in set one. The Pirates took a 23-18 lead, but Rutgers scored five straight points to tie the set at 23. Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) put a ball away to end the Rutgers run and put the Pirates in set point, and a Rutgers attack error gave set one to Seton Hall, 25-23. Schroeder had a team-high four kills in the set.
With the second set tied at seven, Seton Hall scored four straight, capped by a block by Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), to take an 11-7 lead. Trailing 14-11, Rutgers scored five of the next six points to take a 16-15 lead, their first of the set. That lead grew to 19-16, until three straight kills by Hansen tied the score at 19 and an ace by Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) put the Pirates in front, 20-19. With the set tied at 21, Stacey Manthorpe's kill gave Seton Hall a 22-21 lead and the Pirates won the following point after Shelbey Manthorpe barreled onto a courtside table to save a ball. With Rutgers closely tailing, Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) put a ball away to put Seton Hall in set point and a Rutgers' attack error won the set, 25-22, for The Hall.
Set three was close from the start as the teams would combine for 11 ties. With the score tied at 10, Seton Hall scored three straight to take a 13-10 lead. Rutgers however, responded with four straight to take a 14-13 advantage. With the score tied at 17, Seton Hall went on a 5-0 run to take a commanding 22-17 lead, and eventually rolled to a 25-19 set three victory and match sweep.
Seton Hall will return to action later today as the Seton Hall Invitational concludes with a final match against UNLV at 7:00 p.m.
