NEW YORK - On the strength of a great performance at the 2015 Gildan Charleston Classic, sophomore forward Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) of the Seton Hall men's basketball team has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll, the conference office announced Monday.
This is Rodriguez's first career nod onto the honor roll, and he gets the award after averaging 13.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in three games in Charleston, where the Pirates went 2-1 with victories over Bradley and Ole Miss. The Abraham Lincoln High School graduate shot 50 percent from the field in the three games, going 15-for-30.
In the win over Bradley, Rodriguez scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and also grabbed eight rebounds. He then had 12 points and two assists in the win over Ole Miss.
Rodriguez showed his newfound three-point prowess during the tournament, connecting on four triples. He now is 7-for-15 from behind the arc this season after going just 1-for-12 from there last season.
Through five games in this early season, Rodriguez is averaging 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 55 percent from the field. He and the Pirates are 4-1 this season and will face Georgia Saturday at Prudential Center at 7:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on FS1, and Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the call on AM970 The Answer.
