PREVIEW
Seton Hall will return to action this weekend with a pair of road BIG EAST matches. The Pirates will open the weekend at Xavier at 7:00 p.m. ET and finish the trip with a match in Indianapolis vs. Butler on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The latter match will be featured live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
The Hall is coming off a pair of home losses last weekend in Walsh Gym. The Pirates dropped a hard-fought, five-set match vs. Georgetown on Friday. Freshman Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs. Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) and Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) led The Hall with 12 kills apiece. On Saturday, Halloween night, Seton Hall fell to defending champion Creighton in three sets. Schroeder again led the Pirates with nine kills. Coffey again had a double-double. With a combined 46 digs over the weekend, junior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) moved into third place on Seton Hall's career digs list.
On Friday, Seton Hall will travel to Cincinnati to face Xavier. The teams played five sets earlier this season, Oct. 10, in Walsh Gym, with the Musketeers coming out on top. Four Pirates recorded double-figures in kills, while four more did the same in digs. Both teams shot well from the floor with Xavier recording a .241 attack percentage and the Pirates notching a .236. Seton Hall had a decisive advantage in digging, 91-to-69, but Xavier out-blocked the Pirates, 11.0-to-4.0. The Musketeers enter the contest having won three straight, including a five-set win in Providence on Saturday. A win and a Butler loss clinches the BIG EAST Tournament for Xavier.
On Sunday, Seton Hall will make the short trip from Cincinnati to Indianapolis to face Butler at 2:00 p.m. The Pirates completed a three-set sweep of the Bulldogs back on Oct. 9. Senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led all players with 18 kills and only one attack error, while Coffey registered a rare three-set double-double. Butler enters this weekend having won four of their last five matches, including a four-set victory at St. John's on Saturday.
SETON HALL NOTES
FOURNIER MOVES INTO THIRD
With 27 digs vs. Georgetown, junior Tessa Fournier moved past former teammate Shelbey Manthorpe and Jessica Pompey into third place on Seton Hall's all-time digs list. Current assistant coach Allie Matters is second on the list with 1,945 career digs.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
In order to qualify for the 2015 BIG EAST Championship in Omaha, Nov. 27-28, Seton Hall must be one of the top four teams in the final regular season standings. The Pirates cannot catch Creighton, Villanova or Marquette, but the fourth spot is still attainable. Seton Hall trails Xavier by 4.5 games with five remaining and plays the Musketeers this weekend. In order to earn the tie-breaker over Xavier, the Pirates must win in less than five-sets. If they win in five, the tie-breaker will go to total points won during their two meetings this season.
MOVING UP THE BLOCKS LIST
On Oct. 24, Amanda Hansen passed former Pirate Silvia Watson for third place on Seton Hall's all-time blocks list. She needs 24 blocks to pass Perette Arrington for second place.
SCHROEDER NETS HONOR ROLL
Junior Danielle Schroeder was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the second time this season. Schroeder recorded a career-high 18 kills to go with a .300 attack percentage at Marquette on Friday. On Saturday, she again led The Hall with 15 kills and four blocks against the Blue Demons.
HANSEN REACHES MILESTONE
On Oct. 17, Amanda Hansen became only the ninth player in Seton Hall history to record 1,000 career kills. She currently ranks eighth on the Pirates' all-time list (1,043). Former Pirate Kari Belin is seventh on the list with 1,124. Furthermore, Hansen is only the second player in Seton Hall history with more than 1,000 kills and 400 blocks.
NEAR TRIPLE-DOUBLE
Against DePaul on Oct. 2, freshman Sophia Coffey nearly became only the second player in Seton Hall history to record a triple-double. Coffey recorded 28 assists, 11 digs and seven kills. She also had an impressive .600 attack percentage. Shelbey Manthorpe is the only player ever to record a triple-double in Pirates history. She did so 25 times.
TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY
As any self-respecting Pirate knows, September 19 is "Talk Like A Pirate" Day. This year, Seton Hall won matches vs. Cornell and Binghamton and improves to 10-2 all-time on this national holiday for Pirates and Pirate fans.
600TH WIN
Seton Hall's victory over Binghamton on Sept. 19 was the 600th win in program history. The Pirates are now 605-590 in 28+ seasons.
PIRATES WIN SETON HALL CLASSIC
Seton Hall won all three of its matches in its own Seton Hall Classic over the weekend, losing only two sets along the way. The Pirates swept Notre Dame on Friday before beating Hofstra in five sets on Saturday and sweeping Temple in the championship match Saturday evening.
SETON HALL CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
The Pirates landed three players on the Seton Hall Classic All-Tournament Team. Grace Forren, Amanda Hansen and Cherise Hennigan were all honored for their three-match performance.
A HISTORIC WIN
Seton Hall swept Notre Dame on Sept. 4, giving the Pirates their first-ever victory over the Fighting Irish in 20 all-time matches. Prior to the Pirates' victory, The Hall had won only four sets in 19 matches.
FOURNIER, HANSEN PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST
Junior Tessa Fournier and senior Amanda Hansen were named to the 12-person 2015 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. Creighton's Jess Bird was named Preseason Player of the Year.
