SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Head coach Sara Doell announced the 2016 spring schedule for the Seton Hall women's golf team on Wednesday. The Pirates will participate in at least five tournaments this spring.
Seton Hall will open the spring season at the Rio Verde Intercollegiate in Arizona, Feb. 26-28. The Pirates won this event last year by four strokes over a talented field. In a first for the program, teammates Erin McClure and Ali Kruse tied for first among all individual golfers, with McClure winning the tournament on the second playoff hole.
"We are very excited to return to Rio Verde with a chance to defend our title," Doell said. "The field looks to be competitive again and offers up the first chance for us to compete against one of our BIG EAST rivals, Xavier."
After a couple of weeks off and a Spring Break training trip, the Pirates will resume tournament play with the Low Country Intercollegiate at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C., March 19-20.
"A great benefit to competing in the Low Country intercollegiate is having the chance to compete on a golf course that will be very similar to our BIG EAST site," Doell said. "Moss Creek Country Club is in Hilton Head just 20 miles from Callawassie, the site of 2016 BIG EAST Championship. Our hope, is that coming off a good training trip, we'll be ready for a strong field at Moss Creek."
After a year off, the Pirates will return to the comfortable confines of the Hoya Invitational, April 4-5. Seton Hall played in this tournament, held at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md., for four straight years before missing 2015. The Hall's highest finish was third place at 54-over-par among 14 competing teams in 2013.
"The trip down to Georgetown is always one of our favorites as the Members Club at Four Streams is a great test of golf," Doell said. "It's always nice to be able to bring the entire team to an event, and it will also be the last chance to compete against Georgetown, one of our strongest conference rivals, before the BIG EAST Championship."
A new tournament for Seton Hall will be the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, hosted by Ohio State University, April 16-17, in Columbus, Ohio.
"Having the opportunity to compete at Ohio State is a testament to the success this team has had in the past few years," Doell said. "You don't get invited to events like Ohio state without having proven yourself to be a strong team. The scarlet course is one of the best courses that I had the chance to compete on in college and I am looking forward to bring the team to Columbus for the first time."
Finally, the Pirates will attempt to become the first Seton Hall athletics program to win three consecutive BIG EAST titles when it defends its crown at the annual BIG EAST Championship this year at Callawassie Golf Club in Callawassie Island, S.C., April 22-24.
"What a unique opportunity that we have this year to defend our BIG EAST Championship for a second straight year," Doell said. "The team understands that we may not be the best-ranked team in the field and we may not be the favorite to win this year as we were last year, but they know what they have to do from now until April to walk into Callawassie prepared to make history."
