Trio of Singles Wins Not Enough vs. Cal State-LA

SAN DIEGO - Junior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) joined seniors Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) in posting singles victories for the Seton Hall tennis team on Tuesday but the Pirates opened their spring break trip to San Diego with a narrow 5-4 setback against Cal-State Los Angeles.
As opposed to the seven-point maximum traditionally used in Division I dual matches, all nine matches played on Tuesday had a point at stake, including all three that took place in doubles competition.
The Hall (3-6) entered singles play down, 2-1, and earned a split of six singles matchups but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
Liljekvist scored from the top singles position while Shoemaker and Guryanova added straight-set wins of their own from #5 and #6 respectively.
Guryanova was the first to get on the board with a 6-0, 6-4 result against Alexandra Makashov. The senior has now won her last three matches without dropping a set after contributing a pair of dominant wins in the sixth position during a recent sweep of NJIT and Binghamton.
After Cal State-Los Angeles moved back ahead with a point at #3, Shoemaker completed her 7-6, 6-1 victory over Victoria Vo. Shoemaker also recorded two wins in consecutive appearances against the Highlanders and Bearcats and has now come away with three wins in her last four with just one three-set loss to Georgetown's Casey Marx separating her from a four-match unbeaten streak.
With the team score even, Los Angeles clinched the victory with points from the fourth and second positions.
Despite the team result, Liljekvist continued to shine from her post at #1, easing past PacWest Player of the Week Nozomi Matsuoka (6-3, 7-6) who had been unbeaten on both the doubles and singles courts over her last two appearances.
Liljekvist and teammate Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) also paired to hand Matsuoka and partner Sonia Landeros a 9-8 (7-3) loss in first doubles, scoring SHU's lone doubles point of the contest.
The Pirates' top tandem has hit its stride as the spring has progressed and now owns three wins in the last four matches.
The first of three matches scheduled over as many days, Tuesday marked the Pirates' first competitive appearance in an outdoor setting this spring.
SHU will take on UC-San Diego Wednesday in the middle match of the Spring Break trip before wrapping up against Vanguard on Thursday.
