DAYTONA BEACH, FL. -- Junior Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) shot a 2-under-par, 70, to lift the Seton Hall women's golf team into a tie for the lead following two rounds of the 2015 BIG EAST Championship.
Seton Hall, the defending champions, entered the day only one stroke behind Xavier, and now is tied with the Musketeers with only 18 holes remaining. Georgetown also remains in contention, only a single stroke behind the co-leaders. It's the second straight day that the three teams have been separated by one stroke for the team lead.
Tenhundfeld saved her career-best performance for the conference's highest stage. Her 2-under-par, 70, is her first career sub-par round and the lowest single-round score of her career. Her round had just one blemish, a bogey on the third hole, but she more than made up for it with three birdies and 14 pars. At one point, she had 11 straight pars.
Furthermore, Tenhundfeld enters Saturday's final round in a tie for the individual lead with Xavier's Shane Crutchfield. Tenhundfeld tied for second on this course at the 2014 BIG EAST Championship, but has not yet won an individual title in her collegiate career. She is 4-over-par with a 78-70-148 through two rounds.
"I'm ecstatic for Megan," said Seton Hall head coach Sara Doell. "She really picked up her teammates today. We've always known what Megan was capable of and it's really nice to see her top game materialize with a BIG EAST title on the line."
Collectively, the Pirates were much better on Friday and are the lone team in the tournament to shoot less than 300 in a round. Seton Hall shot an 11-over-par, 299, in round two, an improvement of 12 strokes from Thursday. Unfortunately for the Pirates' chase for a second straight title, both Xavier and Georgetown improved mightily on Friday too. Both Seton Hall and Xavier are 34-over-par through two rounds. Seton Hall has shot a 311-299-610, while Xavier has shot a 310-300-610. Georgetown is lurking only one stroke behind and is 35-over-par with a 310-301-611.
"I'm really pleased with a 299," Doell said. "Today's result is more indicative of our usual performance. I'm incredibly excited to be in this close of a tournament with all three teams playing well. We've been here before and we know what it takes to win this event. I am very proud of this team win or lose tomorrow, but I know we haven't played our best golf yet."
Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) turned in another strong effort for a second straight day. The senior had to overcome a rough start as she bogeyed three of the round's first four holes. But she was 1-under-par over the day's final 14 holes to finish at 2-over-par. She also had three birdies on the afternoon and leads the field with seven over the 36 holes. For the tournament, Kruse is in fourth place at 6-over-par with a 76-74-150.
Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) has been consistent throughout the tournament this far and posted a second straight 5-over-par, 77, on Friday. The senior hasn't registered a birdie yet in the tournament, but leads all golfers with 28 pars in the first two rounds. Today, McClure was only 3-over-par, but bogeyed two of her last three holes to settle with a 77. For the tournament, she is tied for eighth place with a 10-over-par, 77-77-154.
Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) was in the midst of a dramatically improved round, but also ran into trouble down the strength. She was only 1-over-par with three holes remaining, but sandwiched two bogeys around a "7" on hole #17's par-4 to finish at 6-over-par. Even with the disappointing finish, Pantelas improved three strokes in round two and is currently tied for 15th with a 15-over-par, 81-78-159.
For a second straight day, Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) had a strong front nine, but faded on the back. Again, Zabrosky was only 2-over-par on the front, but was 8-over on the back with a pair of double-bogeys. Through 36 holes, she is 18-over-par with an 80-82-162.
The competition, which began Thursday, is scheduled for 54 holes over three days. The BIG EAST will crown a team champion, which earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The competition is scheduled to begin each day at 8 a.m. ET.
Golfers will find challenges at every turn on the signature Arthur Hills Course. The par-72 layout is a classic at 6,984 yards.
