Pirates Drop Five-Set Marathon to Utah, 3-2

LOUISVILLE, KY. - Three Pirates reached double-figures in kills and freshman Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) notched her first career double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost to Utah in five sets (16-25, 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 6-15) in the finale of the Active Ankle Challenge on Saturday.
Junior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 17 kills, while freshman Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) notched a career-high 16 kills. Fellow freshman Grace Forren (La Jolla, Calif.) had 12 kills.
After dropping the first set, the Pirates never trailed in set two, and grabbed a 2-1 match lead with a very close 26-24 third set victory.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall (4-5) led 22-21 late in set four and was just three points away from winning the match, but Utah scored four of the last five points to win set four, 25-23. The Utes rolled in set five, jumping out to a 13-4 advantage before winning 15-6. The Pirates had their highest attack percentage of the match of .279 in set four, but Utah connected at a .424 clip.
Numbers & Notes:
- Coffey registered her first double-double with career-highs of 46 assists and 15 digs. She also had four kills and a team-high .375 attack percentage.
- Forren recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs.
- It's the first time this season that two Pirates, Coffey and Forren, have notched double-doubles in the same match.
- Hennigan reached double-figures in kills for the sixth time in nine matches.
- Seton Hall had three players reach double-figures in kills for the first time since Nov. 28 of last season when Molly Grammer, Stacey Manthorpe and Amanda Hansen did so against Marquette in the BIG EAST semifinals.
- Junior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) registered at least 20 kills (21) for the third time this season and 18th time of her career. She was named to the Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team.
- Seton Hall falls to 2-1 in five-set matches. The Pirates defeated Central Arkansas and Hofstra earlier this season.
- This was the first match ever between Seton Hall and Utah.
Next Up:
Seton Hall will finish its in-season tournament schedule with the Cornell Invitational next Friday and Saturday. The Pirates will take on Loyola (Ill.) on Friday, and both host Cornell and Binghamton on Saturday.
