ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded a career-high 20 kills to help lift the Seton Hall volleyball team to a five-set victory over Binghamton, 3-2 (25-17, 25-14, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12), on Saturday in its finale of the Cornell Invitational.
Seton Hall (6-6) won the first two sets in convincing fashion, but dropped the next two sets, before outlasting the Bearcats, 15-12, in set five.
Hansen had a strong and efficient match, recording her 20 kills with only two attack errors for a team-best .439 attack percentage. She also had five blocks.
Turning Point:
The Pirates trailed 8-6 when the teams switched sides in the fifth set. Binghamton was riding the momentum of victories in two straight sets and appeared poised to complete the comeback. The Hall however, scored three of the next four points, and a kill by Kacey Richards (Macedon, N.Y.) tied the set at nine.
The decisive set would become tied twice more before Binghamton took a 12-11 lead. The Hall rallied again though, and scored the last four points of the match. A kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) gave the Pirates a 15-12 win in set five, and five-set match victory.
Numbers & Notes:
- Freshman Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 51 assists to go with 10 digs.
- Coffey's 51 assists are the most by a Pirate since Shelbey Manthorpe had 66 vs. DePaul on Nov. 15, 2014.
- Hansen is the first Pirate to record 20 kills in a match since Stacey Manthorpe had 22 vs. DePaul on Nov. 15, 2014.
- Richards recorded a career-high 12 kills and came just three blocks shy of her first career double-double.
- Junior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) notched a season-high 27 digs. It's her fourth 20-dig match of the season. She finished just two assists shy of a double-double.
- Sophomore Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) recorded a season-high 14 digs.
- Freshman Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tallied a career-high eight blocks to go with six kills.
- Seton Hall had four players reach double-figures in kills (Hansen, Richards, Grace Forren and Danielle Schroeder) for the first time since Nov. 15, 2014.
- Seton Hall's victory improves it to 3-1 in five-set matches this season.
- This was only the second match all-time between Seton Hall and Binghamton. The Pirates have now won both matches.
- September 19 is national "Talk Like a Pirate Day." Seton Hall improves to 10-2 on this day. Me thinks it's a good record.
Next Up:
Seton Hall will return to action when it opens the BIG EAST portion of its schedule next Friday, Sept. 25 at Creighton in a rematch of last year's BIG EAST championship match. The match starts at 8:00 p.m. ET.
