NEW YORK - Coming off a very impressive showing at Iowa that opened a lot of eyes, freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. In addition, junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) delivered a 25-point performance that earned him a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Powell is Seton Hall's 46th all-time Rookie of the Week selection and first since March 2, 2015.
Powell broke out in Seton Hall's Gavitt Tipoff Games victory at Iowa last Thursday, scoring a team-high and career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting overall and 5-of-7 from three-point range. He scored 14 of his 26 in the first half, helping the Pirates stay within striking distance of the Hawkeyes before the team took the lead for good early in the second half. With Iowa threatening to come back late, Powell was a sparkplug with a pair of steals to go with 10 points in the final eight minutes. His corner three-pointer with 2:10 to play was the dagger for the Pirates, who went up 10 at that point and went on to win, 91-83.
Powell's performance proved to be notable in recent Seton Hall history. He is one of only three Pirates freshmen since 2008 to score at least 25 points in a game, joining Jeremy Hazell, who did it four times in 2008, and Isaiah Whitehead, who accomplished it vs. Rutgers in December 2014.
Through three games, Powell is averaging 15.3 points and shooting 51.6 percent overall and 45 percent from three.Â
Rodriguez turned in one the finest performances of his career as he scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds and induced three steals at Iowa. He scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half while shooting 7-for-8 from the field in leading the comeback victory as he proved to be deadly in driving to the basket and finishing. It was Rodriguez's third 20-point effort of his career.
Through three games, Rodriguez is averaging 16.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Seton Hall is 3-0 to start the season and will face Florida in the opening round of the 2016 AdvoCare Invitational Thursday at HP Field house in Orlando, Fla., at 8:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2, and Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the call on AM970 The Answer, simulcast on the Pirate Sports Network.
