11/25/2016 3:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Despite a strong effort late, the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to No. 21 Creighton, 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 22-25), in the semifinal round of the 2016 BIG EAST Championship on Friday.
Â
The loss completes the 2016 season for the Pirates, who finish with a 16-16 final overall record.Â
Â
Creighton scored the first six points of the match to set the tone early, but the Pirates roared back with a 7-0, and blocks by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) and Madison Salkowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) gave The Hall a 7-6 lead. The remainder of the set was back-and-forth until the Bluejays grabbed control late. A kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) cut the Seton Hall lead to two, 18-16, but Creighton finished the set with a 7-0 run to win, 25-16.
Â
Trailing 8-5 in the second set, the Pirates scored three straight, and a kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) tied the score at eight. With the score tied at 10, Creighton again took control, scoring four of the next five points, and never trailed again. The Hall cut the Bluejay lead to 21-19, but out of a timeout, Creighton scored four unanswered points to win set two, 25-19.
Â
The third set was clearly the closest of the match. The teams combined for 14 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 7-6, the Pirates scored two straight, and a kill by Schroeder gave them an 8-7 advantage. With the score tied at 12, Creighton scored three straight to jump ahead, 15-12. But the Pirates bounced back with four straight of their own to take a 16-15 lead. With Seton Hall leading 20-18, the Bluejays scored seven of the final nine points of the match to complete the sweep.
