Coming off a hard-fought weekend at the AdvoCare Invitational along with a critical trip to Hawaii on the horizon, it's safe to say that it's a busy time for the Seton Hall men's basketball program.
With a Thursday night home non-conference game against Columbia in between an eventful schedule, focus became all that much more important. The Pirates' four returning juniors provided it from the get-go, and The Hall answered the bell.
The Pirates looked the part of a reigning BIG EAST champion, avoiding any sort of a letdown as four players scored at least 17 points in a 95-71 rout over the Lions.
The Hall took a 10-point lead into the locker room at halftime and scored 48 in the second half behind freshman Myles Powell, who finished with 21 points on a career-high seven triples. While Powell led the way in scoring, it's the Pirates' four returning juniors who responded last season and set the tone in practice during the week, giving the freshman encouragement.
"My teammates came into practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, and I wasn't shooting the ball as much," said Powell. "They pulled me to the side and yelled and me to shoot the ball. Coming into the game with that mindset, it felt good that my teammates still believed in me."
"We had two great days of practice on Tuesday and Wednesday," said seventh-year head coach Kevin Willard. "We really concentrated on what we had to get better at and the guys understood what we had to get better at."
Seton Hall tallied 20 assists in total on a night in which the Pirates finished at 38-of-65 (58.%) from the floor. While the veterans provided motivation to Powell, one junior in particular added the boost the blue and white was missing on Sunday against Stanford.
Ismael Sanogo was business-like in his return to the rotation, not missing a beat in an 8-rebound, 5-assist performance. The power forward was active on both ends, moving with the ball on offense and opening up more space for his fellow frontcourt teammate, Angel Delgado (19 points, 11 rebounds).
"I talked to Coach (Willard) after we lost to Stanford and he told me that I got to get the guys open shots," said Delgado. "We talked about that this week. This was a good bounce-back tonight."
