South Orange, N.J. - Twenty-seven Seton Hall University student-athletes were inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma, Thursday as part of a ceremony in held in the Walsh Library Rotunda Room.
The impressive group of honorees joins over 150 Seton Hall student-athletes who have been inducted into the prestigious group since 2011. Among those honored were 2015-16 Junior Scholar-Athletes Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) of men's soccer and Melody Bush (Guelph, Ontario) of women's swimming & diving, Sophomore Scholar-Athlete Katie Landes (Stony Point, N.Y.) of women's soccer and Seton Hall Academic All-Stars Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) of women's basketball, Desyre Blackburn (Aloha, Ore.) of women's cross country and Ian Campbell (Corvallis, Ore.) of men's swimming & diving.
The Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society was founded at DePauw University in 1996 as a student-athlete honor society. Its purpose is to recognize high academic achievers and sport letter winners at the collegiate level.
In order to achieve the distinction, the student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher, have achieved at least junior academic standing and be of exceptional moral character.
The stated purposes of the organization are to:
- Encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four year accredited colleges.
- To recognize outstanding academic achievements by intercollegiate varsity sport student-athletes.
- To encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics.
- To recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department and university.
- To mentor and provide leadership to other athletes.
In the Seton Hall Class of 2016, 13 of the university's 14 varsity programs were represented.
A leader among its peers in academic success, Seton Hall's excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the department's commitment to resources and the student-athletes' commitment to placing a high value on their education. Seton Hall supports its student-athletes with outstanding mentoring and tutoring, led by the Academic Support Services staff, and offers its student-athletes a state-of-the-art learning environment in the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence, which was built less than two years ago and offers a main study area, group meeting spaces and private tutoring rooms.
The Pirates have responded with once again breaking a department record for highest grade-point averages. After the Fall 2015 semester, Seton Hall student-athletes had an all-time high 3.353 cumulative GPA, which came after achieving a 3.380 GPA as a collective during the fall. Individually, 141 Pirates, or 58 percent of the student-athlete population, earned Dean's List recognition.
